Dr. Gregory Levin has introduced us to yet another valuable pomegranate variety- Salavatski. This pomegranate variety is known for its ability to withstand extremely cold temperatures, even below 0°F. The fruits of Salavatski are similar in size to Wonderful pomegranates, with an orange-red skin and hard seeds. The fruit has a thick skin and crunchy, juicy seeds that can be eaten fresh in salads or can be made into juice. The tree blooms in late spring and early summer with reddish-orange flowers, and the fruit ripens in late fall. 

Originally imported from Afghanistan, this cold-hardy variety can be grown as far north as zone 6B with proper winter protection. Salavatski is a self-fertile variety, which means it doesn't require a cross-pollinator. The fruit has a thick skin and crunchy, juicy seeds that can be eaten fresh in salads or can be made into juice.
